Masjid al-Hudaibiyah: Treaty, Muhammad, and Pilgrim Site near Makkah

Masjid Hudaybiyyah, مسجد الحديبية, is a commonly believed site near Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that marks a moment in Islamic history. This historic mosque is renowned as the location of the peace treaty signed between the Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah, and the Quraysh tribe of Makkah in 6 AH (628 CE). The treaty of Hudaibiyah prevented the Muslims from entering Makkah for that year but laid the foundation for
future peaceful coexistence. Hudaybiyyah serves as the essential miqat for pilgrims to enter into the sacred state of ihram before the rituals of Hajj and Umrah.

The landmark treaty of Hudaybiyyah was signed after lengthy negotiations, establishing a 10 year peace agreement between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraish tribe. One significant clause allowed Muslims to return the next year to Makkah to do Umrah peacefully. The peace term also outlined rules about defectors and alliances, and it was signed on behalf of Uthman. Even Umar initially had reservations but accepted the Messenger’s wisdom. The allegiance of the sahaba strengthened the Muslim position during this pivotal moment in Muslim history.

Under a nearby acacia tree known as the location of the pact, the Bay’at al-Ridwan took place wherein the sahaba pledged their undying allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ. this act of devotion reinforced unity among Muslims facing uncertainty. Another key moment was when the Prophet ﷺ shaved his head, signifying important rites of ihram at this location. The mosque and its surroundings, including Ottoman-era remains, preserve these historic events as vivid reminders of the past.

Masjid al-Hudaibiyah remains the designated miqat for pilgrims entering the state of ihram before Hajj and Umrah. Pilgrims stop here to prepare both spiritually and physically before moving onward to Masjid al-haram in Makkah. The mosque symbolizes the profound lessons of patience and peace that the Treaty of hudaybiah embodies, reflecting the Messenger’s exemplary peaceful leadership among the Arabs.

Today, Masjid hudaybiah attracts thousands each year as pilgrims journey to Makkah and Madinah. Though modest in size, this historic mosque marks the exact spot where the pact was signed, preserving both physical and spiritual heritage. Visitors enter ihram here and reflect on the 10-year peace agreement signed at this location. cherishing it as a treasured site in Saudi Arabia’s Islamic legacy.

Many hadith associated with the pact recount the Prophet’s ﷺ patience and strategic acumen. The Quran praises the peace in Surah Al-Fath (48:1) نَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًۭا مُّبِينًۭا “Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest.” These scriptural references and sahaba narrations emphasize the pact legal and spiritual significance.
